Summer School

It is not too early to be looking into summer school classes. This is the time of year that public and private schools start posting the classes planned for the summer. Students who earned low grades first semester and/ or are doing poorly in second semester classes should go to summer school. If a student earned an F, the class must be made up. If a student earned a D for the semester, the class should be made up.

Traditionally, public summer school programs only accept students from private schools if the students are making up failing grades and need the credits. They do not accept students who are trying to improve low grades. With the state budget in such disarray, it is difficult to predict what the summer school situation will be like or if there will even be summer classes provided by the public schools. Parents and students should check the websites of the local Catholic high schools to verify what classes will be offered this summer and to read the course descriptions as well as the prerequisites.

Students need to register early in order to secure enrollment. Because the private schools cost money, and enrollments are limited in both the private and public sector, students do not want to register for classes that won’t count for the credit they need. St. Lawrence Academy administrators or counselors must approve a summer school class before a student registers for the class. A class will not be listed on a student’s transcript if the student did not receive prior approval.

Approval is also needed for online courses. These classes can be a practical, less expensive way to repeat a class or improve a grade; however, not all colleges and universities accept online classes for credit. For example, BYU is not accredited through the University of California. National University Virtual High School is an online provider that is accredited through the University of California. This program appears to have options for interaction between student and instructor. Our students need to confer with our school counselors concerning online choices. Again, no class will be placed on a student’s transcript unless the class received approval by an administrator or counselor. Additionally, final exams for online courses must be taken here at Saint Lawrence Academy in order for students to receive credit for the courses and have them placed on SLA transcripts.

No student who is behind in credits will be re-admitted to St. Lawrence Academy in August. Summer transcripts must be sent to us to verify grades and units earned. We need these summer transcripts or copies of summer school report cards in order to make necessary changes to student schedules for the first semester.

To help you identify possible choices for summer school or online classes, the counseling department has created a reference sheet for your use. Listed on the sheet are options for courses that will be approved by us if the course is the appropriate level and semester.

Summer School Options 2009

All courses listed here have been pre-approved, however, you must notify us of your school plans prior to registration so that we can verify you are taking the appropriate course for your situation. All online courses must culminate with a final exam taken at St. Lawrence and proctored by an approved staff member. If you find a course you would like to take that is not on this list you must provide us with the course description prior to registration. (A= 1st semester; B= 2nd semester)

As the Academy prepares for the arrival of new students and the reappearance of returning students, the Academy also welcomes some new faculty and staff.  Joining the Academy for the 2010 – 2011 school year are:

Kelly DeBarr who will be joining the staff as a Spanish instructor, teaching levels 1 and 3.  Additionally, Kelly is interested in coaching swimming, working in Campus Ministry and involving herself with activities dealing with foreign language.

Richard (Rick) Louie is our joining our science department.  Rick will be teaching Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, Physics and Honors Physics.  Rick comes to St. Lawrence Academy with a wealth of experience in teaching at small Catholic high schools, having worked at both Bishop Garces High School in Bakersfield and St. Francis Central Coast Catholic High School in Watsonville.

Kelly Schlernitzauer has joined our front office staff as school register.  Having worked at Harker Academy for ten years, Kelly brings a wealth of front office experience to our campus.

And, Janet Yamada has stepped into the role of Development Director for the Education Center.  Janet has been a volunteer at the Education Center for a number of years.  She has a wealth of fundraising and event planning experience both here at Saint Lawrence and with her volunteer work with Girl Scouts (Troop 61331), San Jose Youth Community Service, and Suzume no Gakko, a Japanese culture program.

We welcome all of our new personnel and wish them the best of luck in the upcoming school year.
